Ch173 What I want

“Victor? Are you not going to answer me?”
He looked at Helen for a long moment. “Do you really want to know what I want?”
“I wouldn’t have asked if I didn’t,” she replied, tilting her head to the side again and she smiled.
He liked when she did that; tilting her head as if signaling she was ready to be kissed and happy for the privilege. He looked down to her lips. Her pretty, smiling, glossy pink lips, tempted him for a taste, but before he indulged in that, he needed to find out a few things, or rather, he needed to explain to her what he required.
“Would you like to step out onto the patio?” he asked.
Her smile broadened. “You wouldn’t be trying to get out of our dance, I hope. Cuz if you are, you’ll get none of my dessert and I’ll take all of yours!”
He chuckled and shook his head. “We can dance all night if you like, or at least until the babysitter expects you back.”
“Oh, I’m pretty sure Mrs. Silverstone is already sound asleep with her crochet hook in hand and a ball of yarn at her feet, and my girls are pigging out on her freshly baked chocolate chip cookies and will soon be snoozing away too, so no one is expecting me back too soon.”
“I see,” he said, reading between the lines. “Okay, we’ll dance until your tiramisu starts beckoning. Then over dessert I’ll give you my answer. That sound all right?”
She laughed. “Okay,” she said, wrapping her arms around his neck. “But I warn you up front, Victor. I’m hearing nothing but music right now.”
“Good,” he said and he twirled her around, dipped her and straightened her up again.

Ch172 Pleasantly Surprised

“I have to say, I was very surprised to hear from you,” Helen said, raising the wine glass to her glossy, pink lips.
“Pleasantly surprised, I hope,” Victor replied.
“Needless to say,” she said with a huge smile. “I expected Halloween night to be when we’d meet again. Did I tell you? My girls are so excited about the party!”
“I’ll bet,” Victor said, smiling mildly. “Have they picked out costumes?”
“They’ve been working on them tirelessly. Bethany is going to be Bella and…”
          “Bella?” Victor asked.
“Bella Swan.” Helen gaped at his blank expression. “Victor, you have to know who Bella Swan is. From the Twilight movies?”
He shrugged. “Never heard of her.”
“Seriously?” Helen said, then she burst out laughing. “Well, no biggie. Give Bethany ten minutes and she’ll explain the entire series. She loves it! Bella was easy to do. Bethany just has to wear a hoodie, tons of white vampire makeup with a little dribble of blood out of the corner of her mouth, oh yes, and fangs.”
“Ah, a vampire. Should have known. It’s a craze now, isn’t it?” Victor said. “And your other daughter?”

Ch171 Do it myself

“Really, Victor, I can do it myself,” Violet said half-heartedly as she leaned heavily on the counter.
“Go sit down before you hurt yourself,” he said. “Marion gave me detailed instructions even a kindergartener can follow. I think I can handle this.” He then proceeded to make an excess of noise as he searched the cabinet beside the stove for the appropriate pot.
“Says the man who once took an hour to peel an onion,” she muttered, grabbing a paring knife, a cutting board and breaking off a piece of the ginger root before sitting at the kitchen table. She peeled the thin, papery skin off all the while watching Victor finally find the pot and then fill it with water and set it on the stove to the lowest setting.
“Victor, it’ll boil sometime next week if you leave it on low. How about putting it on high, why don’t you?” she said, now chopping the ginger.

Ch170 What is the diagnosis

“Well?” Victor asked, tossing aside the relatively recent issue of Birds and Blooms magazine, standing up and going to Violet as she emerged from the examination room into the waiting area. “What is the diagnosis?”
Violet rolled her eyes, and ignoring him, headed toward the reception desk where the nurse waited with her medical chart and the bill for the day.
“Violet, what did the doctor say?” he anxiously said.
“Nothing,” Violet said, taking out her check book. “I’m perfectly fine, as I told you would be the case. Now, will you be quiet so I can pay my bill?”
“All taken care of already, Violet,” said Marion, the nurse.

Ch169 Praying for Strength

“What do you mean she’s not there?”
Victor closed his eyes and put the phone to his chest while praying for strength. He drew in a deep breath and put it back up to his ear. “Exactly what it implies, Cat. Marty is out with a friend.”
“Don’t call me Cat!” she hissed.
“Did it ever occur to you, Cat, that I might call you Cat because you always make such a point about me calling you Cat?” he snapped.
Violet placed a hand on his arm and shook her head. “Don’t antagonize her,” she mouthed.
“That’s like asking me to stop breathing,” he muttered.
“I never asked you to stop breathing, Victor,” Catherine said. “But it may have helped…had you listened. So, where is my mother?”
“I don’t know exactly, Catherine. She’s an independent woman who doesn’t feel the need to tell me her every move.”
“Dammit, Victor! I knew this was a huge mistake. Why the hell did you insist on her moving in with you if you weren’t going to take care of her?”
